What Is the ICF PCC?

The Professional Certified Coach (PCC) is the mid-level credential awarded by the International Coaching Federation (ICF). It is the most widely sought-after and recognized coaching credential globally — the credential that corporate procurement teams most commonly specify when contracting external coaches.

The PCC signals that you have accumulated substantial coaching experience (500+ hours), completed advanced training (125+ hours), and demonstrated proficiency across all ICF Core Competencies. It is the benchmark credential for professional coaches who work in organizational and executive coaching contexts.

ICF PCC Requirements

1. Coach-Specific Training (125+ hours)

You must complete at least 125 hours of coach-specific training through an ICF Level 1 or Level 2 accredited program. ICF Level 2 programs are specifically designed to prepare coaches for PCC-level assessment.

2. Coaching Experience (500+ hours)

You must complete a minimum of 500 hours of coaching experience after beginning coach-specific training. At least 450 hours must be with paying or volunteer clients.

3. Mentor Coaching (10+ hours)

At least 10 hours of mentor coaching from a PCC or MCC credentialed coach, completed over a minimum of three months, with at least three hours of individual sessions.

4. Performance Evaluation

Submit recorded coaching sessions for evaluation against the ICF PCC Markers — a detailed behavioral framework that assesses coaching competence at the PCC level.

5. ICF Credentialing Exam

Pass the ICF Credentialing Exam (155 questions covering coaching ethics, competencies, and professional practice).

ICF PCC Cost Breakdown

  • ICF Level 2 accredited training program: $5,000–$15,000 (varies by provider and format)
  • Mentor coaching (10 hours): $700–$2,000
  • ICF application fee: ~$300 (member) / ~$575 (non-member)
  • ICF membership: ~$245/year (recommended)
  • Total estimated cost: $6,000–$18,000+

Coaches who already hold the ACC can often use existing training hours and experience toward PCC, reducing the additional investment required.

ICF PCC Timeline

Most coaches reach PCC level 3–6 years after starting their coaching practice. The timeline is primarily determined by accumulating 500+ coaching hours. Full-time coaches working with multiple clients can often qualify within 2–3 years. Part-time coaches may take 5–7 years.

Why the PCC Is the Most Valuable ICF Credential

The PCC hits the "sweet spot" for most professional coaches:

  • Corporate acceptance: The majority of corporate coaching contracts require PCC or above
  • Achievable for most coaches: Unlike the MCC (which requires 2,500 hours), the PCC is achievable within 3–5 years for most coaches
  • Income premium: PCC coaches typically charge 30–60% more per session than ACC-only coaches
  • International portability: The PCC is recognized in 140+ countries with no equivalency required

PCC vs MCC: Should You Go Further?

The MCC requires 2,500 coaching hours and represents the top ~4% of credentialed coaches. For most coaches, the PCC is sufficient for:

  • Executive and leadership coaching
  • Corporate and organizational coaching programs
  • Building a full private coaching practice

  • DACH: PCC respected; EMCC EIA Senior Practitioner also used
  • Australasia: PCC is the dominant corporate credential
  • India: PCC highly valued by MNCs and large Indian corporates
  • Middle East: PCC strongly preferred by UAE and Saudi corporate buyers
  • Singapore & SE Asia: PCC is the recognized executive coaching standard
  • Brazil & Latin America: PCC dominant across the region
