What Is COMENSA?

COMENSA — Coaches and Mentors of South Africa — is the primary professional body for coaching and mentoring in South Africa. Founded in 2004, COMENSA sets professional standards for coaches practicing in South Africa and is the recognized standard-setting body in the South African coaching market.

COMENSA credentials are the benchmark for professional coaches in South Africa and are increasingly recognized across the African continent. For coaches practicing or targeting the South African market, COMENSA membership and credentialing is essential for credibility with South African organizations and corporate buyers.

COMENSA operates in alignment with international bodies, including ICF, EMCC, and AC, and many South African coaches hold both COMENSA credentials and international credentials (typically ICF).

COMENSA Credential Levels

1. COMENSA Credentialed Coach

The entry-level COMENSA credential for qualified coaches who have completed a recognized training program and are beginning their professional practice. Requires evidence of training, initial coaching hours, and commitment to COMENSA's ethical code.

• Training: Recognized coaching qualification (aligned with NQF or internationally recognized)
• Practice hours: Entry-level coaching hours as specified by COMENSA
• Cost: ZAR 1,000–2,000 (application)

2. COMENSA Professional Coach

The mid-level credential for coaches with substantial professional experience. Broadly equivalent to ICF PCC in the South African market. Required or preferred by many South African corporate coaching buyers.

• Training: Advanced coaching qualification
• Practice hours: 250–500 hours (as specified by current COMENSA requirements)
• Supervision: Evidence of regular supervision
• Cost: ZAR 2,000–3,500 (application)

3. COMENSA Master Coach

The highest COMENSA credential, recognizing coaches with extensive experience, advanced training, and significant contribution to the South African coaching profession.

• Experience: Extensive coaching practice (500+ hours)
• Advanced portfolio: Comprehensive evidence of master-level competence
• Professional contribution: Evidence of contribution to South African coaching development
• Cost: ZAR 3,500–5,000 (application)

COMENSA and ICF: How They Relate

COMENSA is affiliated with the ICF and many of its standards align with ICF Core Competencies. Most South African coaches who hold COMENSA credentials also pursue ICF credentials — the typical combination being COMENSA Professional Coach + ICF PCC. This combination provides:

• Full credibility in the South African domestic market (COMENSA)
• Global portability and recognition for international clients (ICF)
• Eligibility for both South African and international coaching networks

COMENSA Membership
