What Is the AC Foundation Credential?

The AC Foundation is the entry-level membership and accreditation grade offered by the Association for Coaching (AC) — a leading UK-based professional body for coaches and coaching professionals, with a growing global presence across the Commonwealth.

The Foundation grade is designed for coaches who are in training or at the very beginning of their professional coaching journey. It signals that the coach is engaged with professional standards and committed to the AC's Code of Ethics, even before they have accumulated significant coaching hours.

AC Foundation Requirements

  • In training or recently qualified: Suitable for those currently on a coaching training program or within their first year post-qualification
  • Code of Ethics: Agreement to abide by the AC Code of Ethics and Good Practice
  • AC membership: Active AC membership is required to hold an AC credential
  • Evidence submission: Basic evidence of coaching development activity and professional intent

AC vs ICF vs EMCC at Foundation Level

  • AC Foundation: Best for UK-based coaches early in training; recognized by UK employers and organizations
  • EMCC EIA Foundation: European equivalent; stronger in continental Europe
  • ICF ACC: Requires more training and coaching hours; globally recognized; takes longer to achieve

Many UK coaches start with the AC Foundation and work toward AC Accredited Coach, then add ICF credentials as they accumulate hours.

UK Market Recognition

The AC is well-recognized in UK corporate and public sector environments. Many UK organizations specify AC membership or accreditation in their coaching procurement criteria. The AC is also accepted in Australia, Canada, and South Africa as part of the Commonwealth coaching community.
